RELATED TO THE BLOWING OF GRASS CLIPPINGS & RAKING OF LEAVES INTO STREET
Section 197-8(P). Blowing Grass Clippings and Raking Leaves into Streets. In the interests of Public Safety, and General Welfare, Community Appearance and Efficiency of Operation, it shall be unlawful to rake, place, or mow fallen tree leaves or grass clippings onto the pavement or into the gutter of any public street unless directed by the City of Jefferson. No person shall permit grass clippings from mower swaths to remain upon sidewalks, street pavements, gutters of any public street, or on abutting property not owned or occupied by said person. The penalty for violating this Ordinance is set forth in Chapter 1 Subsection 1-4 (C)(1) and penalties may be adjusted from time to time by Common Council Action.
How Do You Dispose of Yard Waste?
Please do not place yard waste, LEAVES or grass clippings into the street. In the fall the City does allow leaves to be raked into the gutter section of the street. However, this is only in the fall and only for leaves. The City has a special machine for picking up leaves and is only put together and used in the fall. The rest of the year you must take your yard waste to the compost site or mulch and leave the clippings on your lawn
Compost Site Hours
The compost site will be opening for the 2017 season starting today (3/31) at 2pm and will be open all weekend. Please note the new hours for 2017 (homepage banner) as it will not be open 24-7 this year. A lot of time has been spent by Public Works crews improving the site layout, gravel drive and adding new signage. This year in an effort to prevent unlawful dumping, the site will also be under surveillance. As always, the site is intended for Jefferson residents only. Thank you for keeping our compost site clean from garbage.
Brush pick-up starts on the first Monday of each month throughout the year (unless snow plowing prohibits collection). You should have your brush out on the curb by 7 a.m. on Monday to ensure your brush will be picked up during the week. We ask that people put their brush on the tree lawn, with all of the larger heavy ends of the branches facing in one direction, with the flow of the traffic.
We still have people piling their brush in a tangled, mixed up fashion. If this is the case, the city crew will leave the pile of brush for the property owners to either straighten out or dispose of themselves.
Please understand that due to the LARGE volume of brush which can be put at the curb it often takes more than one day for the crews to circulate the entire City. Please be patient.
Brush Pick up in fall.
Brush collection will follow the same yearly schedule. As in the past, the crew will be using a brush chipper to pick up the brush.
DUE TO THE LARGE VOLUME OF REQUESTS RECEIVED BY THE DEPARTMENT, THE CREW IS UNABLE TO ACCOMMODATE REQUESTS FOR BRUSH PICK-UP DURING THE MONTH. PLEASE SCHEDULE TREE AND SHRUB TRIMMING IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE CITY'S SCHEDULE.
Fall Leaf Pick-Up
Starting in mid-October, the City street crew will begin picking up leaves that have been raked into the gutters. The crew will continue to patrol the streets of the City until either all of the leaves are collected, or the snow prohibits them from continuing.
Residents are also advised and encouraged that if you do not want to wait for the crew to come by and pick up your leaves, you can take them to the compost site. The Compost site is open through November (see hours above).
