NOTICE FROM THE BUILDING INSPECTOR REGARDING FLOOD DAMAGED HOMES

Please see the following information from the Jefferson County Health Department for information on Flood Recovery. 

FLOOD INFORMATION - For More information view a Release from the Health Dept.

Avoid floodwaters; water may be contaminated by oil, gasoline, or raw sewage.  Water may also be electrically charged from underground or downed power lines.

Avoid moving water.

Be aware of areas where floodwaters have receded.  Roads may have weakened and could collapse under the weight of a car.

Stay away from downed power lines, and report them to the power company.

Parents should not allow their children to play in floodwaters!

If possible, avoid direct skin contact with floodwater.  Use household rubber gloves, wear waterproof boots, and use a mask when utilizing a bleach solution for disinfecting.

FLOOD CLEANING & DISINFECTING

Clean & disinfect everything that got wet.  Mud left from floodwater can contain sewage and chemicals.  Wash all surfaces with soap and water and disinfect USING 1 CUP OF BLEACH IN 5 GALLONS OF WATER, OR 6 OUNCES OF BLEACH IN 1 GALLON OF WATER.

Wash all linens and clothing in HOT water or have them dry cleaned.

For items that cannot be washed such as furniture or mattresses, allow them to air dry and then spray thoroughly with a disinfectant or discard.

Carpets needs to be steam cleaned.

Remove and discard contaminated household materials that cannot be disinfected, like wall coverings, rugs and drywall.

Parents, TOYS that have been contaminated by flood water should be washed with soap and water and disinfected USING 1 CUP OF BLEACH IN 5 GALLONS OF WATER, OR 6 OUNCES OF BLEACH IN 1 GALLON OF WATER.

FLOOD FOOD SAFETY

Do not eat any food that may have come in contact with floodwater.

Discard food without a waterproof container that has come in contact with floodwater.

Undamaged commercially canned foods can be saved, REMOVE LABEL, WASH WITH SOAP AND WATER, DISINFECT USING 1 CUP OF BLEACH IN 5 GALLONS OF WATER, OR 6 OUNCES OF BLEACH IN 1 GALLON OF WATER, RELABEL USING A MARKER.  BE SURE TO INCLUDE THE EXPIRATION DATE.

Food containers with screw-caps, snap-lids, crimped caps, twist caps, flip tops, and home canned goods should be DISCARDED, as these cannot be disinfected.

Red Cross Clean Up Kits are available at the Family Assistance Centers located in the empty storefront next to Family Dollar and on North Watertown Avenue (follow signs).
