We have noticed and have been advised of many real estate, and other signage posted in the city right-of–way.  That would be the area commonly known as the "tree lawn" or the area between the curb and the sidewalk.  Municipal ordinance #17.08(5) says " only official signs approved by the regulatory committee, such as traffic control, parking restrictions, information, and notices can be posted within the public right-of-way."  This does include the use of utility poles.  A fine can be issued for violation of this ordinance in Jefferson Municipal Court.

If your business is in violation of this ordinance, we ask that this be corrected.  Please be advised that, in the future, signs found to be in violation will be confiscated and the appropriate citations issued.  Keep in mind that we will be treating rummage sale signs and any other illegally posted material in the same manner.

If you have any questions in regards to this information, please contact the police department.
